Overview

The Senior Development Manager leads the end-to-end origination and development of AMPYR’s D-BESS pipeline across the National Electricity Market (NEM). The role is accountable for converting AMPYR’s contracted D-BESS offtake portfolio into FID-ready, bankable projects delivered on time, on budget, and within the organisation’s Stage Gate framework.

The role sits in the Origination and Development team, reports to the Head of Origination and Development, and has one direct report (a Development Manager). The scope spans both self-originated sites and externally originated pipeline sourced through AMPYR’s developer partners, with accountability for balancing the two to optimise delivery against offtake obligations and platform economics.

The Senior Development Manager is a core contributor to the D-BESS governance framework and is AMPYR’s primary external-facing point of contact for developer partners, DNSPs, councils, landowners and commercial counterparties across the distributed pipeline.

AMPYR Australia:

  • Owns a 23MW portfolio of C&I solar assets across 130 sites and is developing a 300MW portfolio of distributed sub-5 MW BESS (D-BESS) assets.
  • Is constructing the 300MW/600MWh Wellington BESS project along with a rapidly growing pipeline of more than 2500MW of utility energy storage projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead distributed BESS origination and development end-to-end, from site identification through to FID-ready status, managing critical path and sequencing across a portfolio of concurrent sites.
  • Operate within and continuously improve the D-BESS development governance framework, including coordinating due diligence inputs, managing stage gate approvals, preparing D-BESS SteerCo and Investment Committee papers.
  • Own the D-BESS reporting and pipeline tracker and maintain a disciplined reporting cadence to key internal stakeholders.
  • Lead site origination, landowner engagement, option and lease negotiation, and planning and environmental approvals across NEM states.
  • Manage AMPYR’s external developer partners across their contracted pipeline.
  • Identify and onboard new developer partners where they extend AMPYR’s reach into priority NEM regions or augment internal origination capacity.
  • Balance self-originated and partner-originated pipeline to optimise delivery against offtake obligations and platform economics.
  • Drive connection applications and negotiations with DNSPs through to offer and execution.
  • Structure each project to deliver against AMPYRs D-BESS contracted offtake portfolio, including geographic mix and milestone commitments.
  • Resolve key development risks early to maintain a bankable pipeline of projects that meet offtake volume requirements.
  • Ensure clean handover to the Delivery function at NTP with a complete project data room.
  • Contribute to project financing and platform capital raises through supporting external-party due diligence on the development pipeline.
  • Manage HSSE outcomes across development-phase activities, including site access, contractor management, fire risk considerations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coach and develop the Development Manager direct report, including the setting of performance goals, identifying training needs and undertaking performance reviews.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • University qualified in engineering, commerce, law, planning, environmental science or a related discipline.
  • >8years’ experience in renewable energy or storage development in Australia, with a demonstrable track record of leading projects from origination through to FID or financial close. Sub-5 MW distributed BESS experience strongly preferred with utility-scale BESS experience will also be considered.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically across NEM states, estimated at up to ~25% of working time.
  • Direct experience managing or partnering with developer counterparties, and negotiating option, lease, development and co-development agreements.
  • Strong working knowledge of the NEM and the commercial drivers for distributed battery storage.
  • Working knowledge of distribution network connection processes for sub-5 MW projects across the NEM, including practical timelines and risks.
  • Working knowledge of planning approval pathways across NEM states.
  • Strong commercial and financial literacy, including project economics, capex/opex, development budgets, sensitivities, and bankability requirements under project finance.
  • Demonstrated people-leadership experience including coaching, developing and holding to account direct or indirect reports.

Desirable

  • Experience operating within a Stage Gate or equivalent development governance framework.
  • Experience delivering into a contracted offtake portfolio.
  • Existing relationships with Australian DNSPs, councils and specialist distributed developers.
